Journal Entry 16 - Why I don't believe in New Years Resolutions

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

As 2022 came to an end, everyone started asking me if I had any resolutions for the new year. For as long as I can remember, I’ve never really believed in new year's resolutions (I know, a self-development obsessed girl like me). I sat and pondered why everyone made such a big deal about becoming a “new person” when it came around to the New Year. In the last 12 months, I have come leaps and bounds. I graduated from university, moved overseas, started a new job and visited so many amazing places all over Europe. Did I wait until the new year to do those things, no. These are the main reasons why I don’t believe in new year's resolutions.

Firstly, I think that if someone truly wants to better themselves, they shouldn’t need to wait 365 days to start taking care of their body mentally, physically, and emotionally. If you have not been growing already, I don’t know why a new year would change that. Don’t get me wrong, wanting to become a better version of yourself is a fantastic trait. However, so many people who do not care about improving themselves suddenly feel pressured to be making changes because it's the beginning of a new year.

Secondly, why do we need to wait until the date January 1st to start making changes? By all means, use this time to set new goals, clear out your wardrobe, and give yourself a pamper. But, remember that you can start implementing new habits/mindsets at any time. My advice is that if you have habits you want to implement, or you don’t like the life you are currently living, do something about it now. January 1st is just a date, so make your starting time a new date.

If you do need some sort of starting time why not try the start of a month? Or even the start of a week.

Lastly, when we make these resolutions we tend to set unrealistic goals that make us feel defeated. They fail in the first few months and then we give up until the next year. Instead, if we achieve small goals we will feel so much more accomplished even with the tiniest difference. This year lets swap setting a few massive goals with setting lots of smaller ones. For example, instead of losing 20kg start with losing 2kg. Or instead of reading 10 books, start with 1. If you want to drink more water don't pressure yourself to drink 3L right away, leave a glass next to your bed ready for when you wake up.

Becoming your ideal self takes time, hard work and a lot of self-love. You need to be resilient and forgive yourself when you fail. It doesn't happen overnight and thats okay. Instead of pressuring yourself to achieve these huge goals that you fail at every New Year, start smaller. And for goodness sake don’t wait till next year to start!

Thank you, love Amy ♡
