Journal Entry 20 - Why I recommend working at PGL

PGL is an outdoor experience company designed for enriching young people's lives. It includes a range of activities such as watersports, ropes activities and team challenges. I began working at PGL in June of 2022 as a part of my working holiday in the UK. I knew I would love working with kids but I never imagined everything I would gain from it. My confidence in groups has skyrocketed, I have met some genuinely fantastic people, and experienced a diverse range of things I would never have pictured myself doing. So, this is why I recommend you to work at PGL if you are thinking about travelling.

1. You work outdoors and therefore exercise a lot

I have never exercised so much in my life as I have working outdoors at an activity centre. Forget the gym, I do over 20,000 steps on centre most days here. I love being active throughout the day.

2. Accommodation and food are included

Forget about your commute to work, how about a 1 minute walk? That's my life here. Have a 15-minute break, well your room is right up the hill. Living on-site has its challenges, but the majority of the time it's super convenient. PGL also provides a food package which offers you three meals a day (cooked for you) at certain times in the dining hall.

3. A fantastic way to meet people

I have made some amazing friendships during my time here. A few of these I have travelled with and others I am currently planning some more trips. At PGL they run a vast range of social events including weekly clubs, special event nights and days out. My personal favourite is the weekly quiz (which staff members take turns to run). I can genuinely say I have made some lifelong friends in the past year.

4. Local sightseeing instead of big cities

If I didn’t decide to live outside of the main tourist points of the UK (such as London), I would have never experienced some of the things I have today. By living in Dorset (a County in England) I have visited so many more places than I planned to. Many of these places I didn’t even know existed beforehand.

5. Cool experiences included

PGL in general is a cool place to work. They offer free use of equipment as long as you are trained. Sometimes some of this even happens during work hours. I remember last year I was rostered on to be an “abseil body” which involved doing abseil for the whole afternoon (and getting paid for it). Additionally, staff typically organise group days out or events. For example, I have been to a waterpark, to local towns and beach parties. If you are looking at certain centres I would recommend Osmington Bay because it is right next to the ocean and is located in a beautiful area.
